With Descender ending in a few months, I’ve been scrambling to find new comics to read. This desire for “new” has even led me to go back through old stuff. Both stuff that I’ve read and want to revisit and some old stuff that’s new to me.
I was reminded of a lifelong love of The Hulk dating back to the old Bill Bixby TV series and actually meeting Lou Ferrigno in real life and decided to look into it.
Comixology was having a sale and one of the books was called World War Hulk by Greg Pak and John Romita Jr. It looked cool, so I nabbed it.
This 11-year-old collection roughly follows some of what we saw in Thor: Ragnarok with Hulk on the planet Sakaar where he starts as a reject and then a slave and then a gladiator and then a champion.
What I didn’t know and that was twisted around for the Marvel Cinematic Universe interpretation of events is that Hulk was deemed to be a danger to Earth so Mr. Fantastic, Iron Man, Black Bolt, and Doctor Strange blasted him to Sakaar.
To add insult to injury, after Hulk became a champion and a leader of the people, he got married and had a kid only to have those four Earth heroes send a bomb that wipes out Sakaar and kills Hulks family and his people.
So, um, yeah, Hulk is pissed and he’s coming back to Earth for a reckoning.
And that’s where this book starts (I’ll need to look up the prior story). What happens next is just glorious Hulk going SMASH on the Avengers and the Fantastic Four.
Right now I’m halfway through and have just seen the entry of the venerated General Ross to the war.
Oh, this is gonna be good.
I may just latch onto Hulk for comic reading fun. Any recommendations?
