As per usual with most major holidays, Katie and I spent the weekend with two different families, Saturday night with mine and Sunday afternoon with her's.
No, this is not going to be a recap of all the events that went on at both celebrations. Actually, it's more of a decrying of a family tradition whose time has passed. Sadly, too.
The Easter Egg Hunt.
For years, we've been doing Easter Egg Hunts with Katie's family simply because there were young kids around that enjoyed being a part of such a vaunted event. Some of us adult-like people would hide the eggs in the yard and then let the younger ones go find them. They would then be treated to a bag full of chocolate and, perhaps, money.
However, I think it may be time to officially kill this tradition. At least until new "young-uns" are brought into the fold.
You see, currently, the youngest of the bunch is E, and he's 12 or 13 right now. At yesterday's celebration, not only was it a struggle to get some of us off our butts to go hide the eggs, but we also had to "wait until the end of the inning" of the Cubs-Brewers game and then pick E up by the collar of his shirt to make him go out and find them. Then, when we realized he was pretty much the only one taking part, all of us 20- and 30-somethings had to go out and search for the eggs as well just to make it look good.
And we were the ones that hid them in the first place.
So somebody tell me how wrong that is? Time to kill it, you think? Yeah, I do too.
But at least Katie and I found four bucks. That's my allowance for the week, baby!

Way too many to list. All the original Star Wars films, the Indiana Jones series, the original Die Hard, Robocop, The Untouchables, Real Genius, Ghostbusters, Tombstone, and dozens more.

13 Going on 30 with Katie. She worships the movie so we saw it twice. She may have even gone back for a third viewing with a friend when I was working. Not sure, though.
3. Name an actor that would make you more inclined to see a movie.
Morgan Freeman. Ever since The Shawshank Redemption, I've been hooked. Also Don Cheadle whom I believe to be one of Hollywood’s most talented and underappreciated actors.
4. Name an actor that would make you less likely to see a movie.
Jack Black and Cameron Diaz. Yet I enjoyed Holiday. Go fig.
5. Name a movie that you can and do quote from.
Real Genius, Ghostbusters, and Tombstone. Almost sickening levels of quotation.
6. Name a movie musical that you know all of the lyrics to all of the songs.
None really. Although I do know nearly all the lyrics to Rent, but I've never seen the movie version. Just the theatrical version twice.
7. Name a movie that you have been known to sing along with.
Ghostbusters. Yes, I loved that soundtrack.
8. Name a movie that you would recommend everyone see.
Little Miss Sunshine. And I was so disappointed to hear both my parents disliked it.
9. Name a movie that you own.
Some might ask, “what doesn’t he own?” But we have been trying to cut down on the quantity lately. I think we just sold off about 80 DVDs and have completely liquefied our VHS collection.
10. Name an actor that launched his/her entertainment career in another medium but who has surprised you with his/her acting chops.
I know it was just a bit part, but I loved Bob Barker in Happy Gilmore. I think it was more his 1-2 combo than his acting chops, though.
11. Have you ever seen a movie in a drive-in? If so, what?
Many. But the most recent was a bit more than a decade ago and was a double feature of Independence Day and Eraser.
12. Ever made out in a movie?
Not that I recall.
13. Name a movie that you keep meaning to see but just haven’t yet gotten around to it.
North by Northwest. And me being a Hitchcock fan. How sad is that? Odd thing is I have rented it and just never had time to actually watch it before it was due back.
14. Ever walked out of a movie?
One of my own accord, Oliver Stone's The Doors. When I was a kid, my parents decided to leave a flick in the middle that we all went to. Some post-apocalyptic movie that came out in the early 80s. I think it was called The Comet or Night of the Comet, perhaps?
15. Name a movie that made you cry in the theater.
There are a couple but I can't think of them at the moment. Wait! I remember. It was The Family Stone.
16. What’s the last movie you saw in the theater?
Blades of Glory a couple weekends ago. Decently funny. Better than I expected, but not by much.
17. What’s your favorite/preferred genre of movie?
It was once action/adventure. But that genre has become so watered down and generic that it is now just sad. So, maybe comedy? Everyone can use a good laugh.
18. What’s the first movie you remember seeing in the theater?
Star Wars in '79 during one of the many, many rereleases.
19. What movie do you wish you had never seen?
There are quite a few of these as well. Blair Witch Project comes to mind. So does The Village.
20. What is the weirdest movie you enjoyed?
Napoleon Dynamite. I'm still not sure why I liked it.
21. What is the scariest movie you've seen?
The Exorcist: The Version You've Never Seen. I don’t care how old that movie is, it is still light years better than what currently passes as horror like The Ring. What a joke.
22. What is the funniest movie you've seen?
Real Genius. I love that movie and relate to it like few others. No, not because I created a laser or anything. Although that could’ve been a fun science project. I’m also a big fan of Fletch. Fan-friggin’-tastic film.
We need to kill the Easter egg hunt and I can't wait to check back later and hear what people say. It stinks. Everything about it stinks. I don't eat the candy, I don't enjoy hiding the eggs and if you hide the eggs what's the point of YOU then going out and finding them? Stupid tradition in the Adams household and someone needs to stop Marj. Kevin, I think that person is you.
You really didn't like The Village? I thought it was good. Well, agree to disagree, eventhough I'm right.....as usual.

Kill the Easter egg hunt? No. I used to hang out with a group of folks who had an Easter egg hunt for grown-ups. Of course, now it's for kids since most of them have children now. Stupid kids ruining my Easter fun.
I am with you on the Morgan Freeman/Don Cheadle thing. I'll say to myself, "Oh, he's in it. It can't be all that bad then." And you have not seen North by Northwest? You must rectify this immediately. I mean like tonight.

First, thank God you did this meme! I had nada for my Midweek Meme on Wednesday, and this is a cool one.
You and my spousal unit would get along like buttah. I swear, if I have to watch Tombstone one more time, I'll run screaming down the street. And he'd be as bad with Real Genius if it was broadcast as often.

You really must see North By Northwest. It's excellent, one of my top three Hitchcock favorites.
What did you dislike so much about The Doors?
NOTHING will EVER get me to watch that version of The Exorcist.

It's sad to see the Easter Egg Hunt go but yeah, if you are forcing the youngest to get up and go find them, does it stop being fun? Wait, what if all the eggs had $20's in them? LOL.
So you don't like Jack Black when he is in a serious role or at all? I can see how he would get grating after awhile; the latest Tenacious D album kind of stank anyway. You know, I completely loathe Jim Carey when he is doing "funny man" but like him when he is serious.

I knew there was a reason I liked you! Real Genius has to be one of my all time favs. I quote that movie to this day!
And you missed a cool movie in "Night of the Comet". Their stepmother gets turned to dust because she stands outside to watch the comet. Then a free-for-all ensues at the mall. Every 12 year old girl's fantasy!
I cried at the Family Stone too. I thought it sucked until that "twist" was thrown in. I didn't expect to cry!

Scott, nope, didn't like The Village. I guessed the ending before I even saw it. You know that can't be good. And, no, I'm not "that" guy who is going to tell your mom.
Dagny, I've been meaning to rectify the NxNW situation for some time now and just keep forgetting. And it's Cary Grant so you know it's gonna be great.
Fruitcake, any man that doesn't like Tombstone needs to hand in his man card now. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. I don't remember what I disliked about The Doors at the time. I've watched it once since then and I still didn't find it all that great, but I did finish it this time. Tell me that Rear Window is on your top three Hitchcock list. It's my #1.
Hilly, I don't like Jack Black at all. Serious, comedic, anything. But Holiday I could tolerate. Some may argue even enjoy.
TSM, I've liked Real Genius longer than almost any movie I've ever seen save for, say, the original Star Wars movies and Raiders of the Lost Ark. I've been trying to find Night of the Comet so I could watch it and see what the big deal was, but it's not on DVD yet. Not that I could find several months ago, anyway. I plan on visiting your blog later today. It's in my Google Reader account.

We had a really fun egg hunt yesterday. But, my kids are little and so are all their cousins. When they get older, we will probably stop, but for now I really enjoy watching them be so excited.

Star Wars in 76 was my first movie :o) I have Blair Witch with the shrink wrap still on and I pretty much make up an excuse to not watch it every time we are looking for a movie. Your answer will be my next excuse, so thanks for that, hah!

We did an Egg Hunt yesterday, despite the grandkids ranging from 14 to 27. One family friend in her mid 20s got out of it because she has a 4 year old son. Once you provide a small child to take you place in the hunt, you're free. Until then, you're out there hunting up Easter eggs, mimosa or beer in hand. I suppose I'm still in favor of it, if only because dying the eggs provided excellent colors for decorating my grandma's dog.
PS-- The first movie I ever saw was at a drive-in: Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. I was two years old, and I remember the end of the movie.

sizzle, actually, I didn't like High Fidelity, period. Loved the book so the movie was a disappointment.
tori, to watch it is one thing. But to have to take part in it due to lack of participation is a whole other thing.
Foo, you mean Star Wars in '77? Wasn't released until May 77. I know my SW facts. ;-) My excuse on Blair Witch is your excuse. Use it anytime you need!
