Don't you know what it's really about...

I know this is a couple days late, but I was waiting for official confirmation. And we have it. Thus, I can now say that it really saddened me to learn that the hospitalization of Owen Wilson on Sunday was, in fact, related to a suicide attempt.

Owenwilson I'm not going to sit here and complain that there is no reason for Wilson to do something this stupid. Some will say that he has it all... a great job, a lot of money rolling in, scads of women, etc., etc., ad infinitum. I won't say this because obviously there is something else, something that we don't know, about which he is deeply disturbed.

I'm upset mostly because I find Owen and his brother, Luke Wilson, to be the more talented members of the so-called Frat Pack. Ben Stiller? Meh. Vince Vaughan? He's okay. Will Ferrell? Once in a blue moon. Jack Black? Nuh-uh. Steve Carell? Really only in The Office.

But I'm a fan of Owen Wilson and I just think Hollyweird would be that much less interesting should he not be with us anymore.

We'd have no more of the zaniness, the coolness, the goofy hair, the crooked nose, nor the fantastic writing that he churns out when he works with his buddy, Wes Anderson... I still think The Royal Tenenbaums is one of the most fantastically offbeat films in recent years.

Owen, I wish you the best in your recovery.

About two months ago, Katie started re-reading Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (book five). Her reasoning was that it had been four years since she read it and she wanted to know what was going on before...

The mere fact that bookstores these days have lounges, cafes, and/or big comfy chairs is meant to convey the idea that they want you to take a load off and spend some time in their stores, right? It's also probably...

Was THAT what happened? I hadn't heard. It was still under wraps when it was on the news. I'm with you though. I am a fan. It seems like he steals every scene he's in. I hope he doesn't turn into another Hollywood fatality!

August

That was really sweet Kap. I feel so bad too. Poor guy. Poor anyone who is going through anything that gets them to that point. This world is so sad sometimes.

sizzle

It seems to be that many of the best comedic minds struggle with depression. Take Robin Williams for example. I think Owen is very talented and I'm sorry to hear he was at such a low place he felt suicide was his only answer. I hope he gets the help he needs to feel better about living.

Beth

Funny that people, not just celebs, can put on such a good front that no one really realizes how they feel and who they are. We've lost some of the best people in the spotlight never knowing that they were a mess inside. What a shame, I hope, for his sake, that he gets better and can move on. It will be even more difficult for him in the future because his facade has fallen.

kilax

What is awful is all the websites making fun of him for his "cry for help." They imply that because the cuts were not deep, he is not a real man, he is weak, etc. That is so awful to say about someone. I hope he gets the help he needs.

kapgar

metalmom, there was speculation ever since it was first reported. But I didn't want to say anything hoping that it was false. He does steal his scenes.

August, thanks. It is sad.

sizzle, I forgot all about Robin Williams and I hope Owen does get the help he so desperately needs.

Beth, that's why they get paid so much, because they're great at acting. I just wish he didn't have to act, and thus mislead, in his real life. Maybe he would've gotten the help he needed that much sooner.

kilax, they're making fun of him? That's just wrong on so many levels.

sue

Ditto.

ajooja

Depression is a lot tougher to deal with than most people think. Having money, fame, and hot babes doesn't really have anything to do with it. In fact, because the good times are so good, the bad times might be even worse.

kapgar

sue, it's hard not to feel bad for him.

ajooja, that was one thing I was thinking but forgot to write in my original post. Thanks for pointing that out for people!

Erin

It's sad because he is so very awesome and I've followed his career with great interest because he's a Longhorn! This made me proud of his accomplishments, as I am when anyone from my alma mater achieves anything in the world or Hollywood, but even more so because he's smart and funny while doing it. Where I was proud of him before, I am worried for him now. I hope his family can help him through this and to see that the world, Texas, and Hollywood would really like him to stick around for the next 60 or so years.

Bre

Woah. I'm out of the celeb. gossip loop apparently!

Hilly

I really need to read more celebrity news because I had no idea this was going on. My love and prayers are with Owen because even celebrities need our love too. It's sad that anyone would be that devastated with life and I hope he finds some peace and inner love.

diane

Thanks for posting this Kapgar. I love what Hilly said about how even celebrities need our love and prayers. I adore Owen Wilson--he and Luke crack me up, and I think they are both so talented. I am just so grateful that the "attempt" was not successful.

kapgar

Erin, he seems to have a pretty tight family unit that I think can help him through pretty well.

Bre, you??

Hilly, yes they do need our love too.

diane, believe me, you're not the only one who's happy it wasn't successful.

Lisa

I just don't understand suicide being an option for anything. I really like Owen, and think he's a great talent, but I wish he'd not chosen this route with all the other options for help.

kapgar

I agree with you completely.

Hyperion

When you think about The Royal Tenenbaums, it's kind of weird because Owen Wilson wrote that script, which had his real life brother Luke attempt suicide, one of the most emotionally devastating screen suicide attempts ever. (I'm not sure if that's a category, but it should be.)

I'm not as sold on Wilson as you, but I have actually been a fan since BOTTLE ROCKET, a wonderful small film, and worth checking out if only for his performance.

kapgar

Hyperion, Owen's not a great actor by any stretch, but I enjoy watching him in his movies and I think that's more than enough. And I would love to see him have a chance to write again. I hadn't even considered the suicide scene in Tenenbaums. It's been so long since I've seen it. That is kind of weird.
