Campaign slogans, election year...
So I was reading some headlines this morning and I found out that Hillary Clinton secured the Puerto Rico primary. This led to a rather shocking revelation on my part...
Puerto Ricans can vote?
I know that Puerto Rico is a protectorate of the U.S. or a territory or whatever the hell is going on down there. I also know that Puerto Ricans have no desire to become a U.S. state whatsoever. Well, I'm sure someone down there might like to see it happen, but I think, for the most part, they want nothing to do with us in an official capacity. And, yet, they get to vote?
This lack of statehood, of course, also means they don't have to pay taxes to the United States. Dang, how'd they get the best of both worlds?
Nice gig, eh?
Does anybody else feel like, during this campaign season, they've learned more about American politics than they ever wanted to know? Yeah, that's my hand flailing wildly back and forth.
Oh, I'm depressing myself again. I need happy thoughts. How about a Wayne's World reunion a la the 2008 MTV Movie Awards? Classic stuff here!
For the record, I've never embedded an MTV video before, so if it doesn't work, blame them and click over to their site to view it. Totally worth it.
I think I may just increase the happy factor even more with a meme in the extended post. Sound good by you?
I stole this from Bec...
- What time did you get up this morning? 5:15. Blech.
- Diamonds or pearls? I'm a guy, what the hell do I care?
- What was the last film you saw at the cinema? We did watch Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull yesterday. Suffice it to say, Iron Man is still the movie of the summer.
- What is your favorite TV show? There are so many. But I'd have to put The Office at the top with fare like Psych in a close second.
- What do you usually have for breakfast? An English muffin or bagel. Or whatever else I can scrounge up.
- What is your middle name? Wayne.
- What food do you dislike? Mushrooms and olives.
- What is your favorite CD at the moment? I'm liking on REM's new one Accelerate.
- What kind of car do you drive? 1997 Ford Ranger.
- What is your favorite sandwich? I haven't really found a great sandwich shop yet. But I've got one that's working steadily on taking that title.
- Favorite item of clothing? Not sure if I have a favorite, per se.
- If you could go anywhere in the world on vacation, where would you go? Right now I'm digging on Kisumu, Kenya.
- Favorite brand of clothing? Again, not sure I have one. I'm not going to kiss as much ass as Bec did. She did enough for all of us combined.
- Where would you retire to? San Francisco would be nice if a retiree could ever afford it.
- What was your most recent memorable birthday? I try not to celebrate my own birthdays. Not a big fan.
- Favorite sport to watch? Football... of the U.S. varietal. Chicago Bears specifically.
- Furthest place you are sending this? Not sending it anywhere.
- Are you a morning person or a night person? At the moment, neither. I need sleep at both times of day. Generally more of a morning person I think
- What is your shoe size? Somewhere between 10.5 and 11.5 U.S. depending on who's making the shoe.
- Pets? None.
- What did you want to be when you were little? Astronaut and firefighter. Being both would make me explode with joy.
- How are you today? A little warm at the moment. Pretty hot outside. Finally.
- What is your favorite candy? Oh so many. Hence my overweightedness.
- What is your favorite flower? I don't really know names of flowers. I like what I see when I see it and promptly forget about it.
- What is a day on the calendar you are looking forward to? I'm not sure at the moment. Time to break out the calendar. KATIE!
- What is your full name? I just gave you my middle name. Figure it out yourselves.
- What are you listening to right now? Nothing. iPod is not plugged into my skull. Odd.
- What was the last thing you ate? Spinach salad with chicken, bleu cheese, pecans, and dried cranberries. Good stuff.
- Do you wish on stars? Much like Bec, I used to. Alas...
- If you were a crayon, what color would you be? Midnight blue.
- How is the weather right now? It's hot. Damn hot. It's so hot I could fry an egg in my shorts it's that damn hot.
- Last person you spoke to on the phone? Somebody at Katie's work who had no idea who she was.
- Favorite soft drink? Dr. Pepper.
- Favorite restaurant? Right now, Chipotle
- Hair color? What hair?
- What was your favorite toy as a child? Legos.
- Summer or winter? Winter. Easier to stay warm in the cold than to cool off in the heat.
- Hugs or kisses? From Katie? Both.
- Chocolate or Vanilla? Chocolate.
- Coffee or tea? Both depending on my mood.
- When was the last time you cried? I don't remember. Probably some sappy movie with Katie.
- What is under your bed? Clothes that I haven't looked at in a couple years and the WiFi gear for our house.
- What did you do last night? Went out for a bike ride with Katie.
- What are you afraid of? Spiders, falling, ladders.
- Salty or sweet? Both are necessary to achieve taste bud zen.
- How many keys on your key ring? Four.
- Favorite day of the week? Saturday.
- Do you make friends easily? I dunno. I can be friendly with people, but I'm terrible about keeping up on communication. Sorry.
I thought there were 50 of these. Not sure what happened to the other two. Must've accidentally deleted them and I'm too lazy to figure out which ones they were. Oh well.
Steal at will.
Apparently they can vote... but only 10% of them... cuz those were the ones that seeminly made the effort... Some win..

I really loves these meme thingys - your answer about your full name made me snort wine, which as I have learned is not my most attractive look - thanks for that ;o)

I don't THINK they can vote in the general election though. Just the primaries.
Because THAT makes total sense.

I'm going to have to steal that meme from you and Bec. I found myself answering a lot of them. Every once in a while, those kinds of posts are fun. I get them in email a lot, but tend to skip most of them because I don't care to flood people's email boxes with crazy shit about myself. In a blog entry, well, that's a different story.
Iron Man, R.E.M.;s new album, Dr Pepper, Chipotle, Legos, 10.5 shoe size..... all cool. But I like summer vs. winter.... even if it's easier to get warm. Less snow, more sun.

I'm just trying to figure out why they liked Hillary better than Obama!

Ass (or in 'British' - arse) kissing is a skill I practice regularly - going for my next grade soon... wish me luck!

Oh, and thanks for the MTV link. So smart of them to revive Wayne's World. I would have also been happy to have had Beavis and Butthead come out of retirement.

I certainly have learned a great deal but they can vote in primaries but have no voting seat in Congress and do not have a vote in the upcoming federal election.
I guess my questions is why don't you know this stuff?

DutchBitch, 10% eh? So they also share our apathy level, maybe moreso.
Penelope, that could make for a fun YouTube video.
Britt, I think I read that after writing this, too. Funny thing is that the first article I read said nothing about it at all. Actually, they said the same thing as me but implied they do get to vote in the general election. Nothing like having our facts straight.
Avitable, nobody can explain it.
Bec, true on arse. Gotta remember that. Good luck!
marty, no problem on both counts. If they brought back Beavis & Butt-head, I might just die a happy man.
Nat, to be honest with you, they glance over the subject of protectorates and territories in US history at nearly all levels of education here. For the most part, they mention that they are and that's about it. After a while, when you're conditioned to think that something is not worth knowing, you actually start to believe it. It's sad and apathetic, but I guarantee that your tidbit of knowledge about it right there trumps the knowledge that 80%+ of USians have.

I am not a fan of these in email form, but on a blog it is sort of cool. I love reading new things that you might not think to mention.

Whoooo Legos!
I almost need to have kids just so I can play with Legos again without people thinking I'm weird.

tori, I hate them in e-mail format, too. I've actually received a few in e-mails that I've responded to on my blog, just 'cause. They work better in that format anyway.
Stacey, you never need an excuse to play with Legos. Just play. Go to the store now and buy some. You won't regret it! ;-)

Ah, most excellent! Wayne's World! Party time! Thanks for that link. I miss Wayne and Garth.

So do I. I watched that three times yesterday. I may watch it a couple more today.
Posted by: kapgar | Tuesday, 03 June 2008 at 11:01 AM
I made my [then fiancee]husband sit down and watch Wayne's World bc *GASP* he had never seen it. It almost ruined our relationship....he just doesn't get it. sigh.
I'm ignoring the political side of this blog for now because I hate that Puerto Ricans (as in the ones that live in Puerto Rico) have a say so in our country.

Tell your husband I'm breaking up with him, too.
