When the lights go down in the city...
Sorry, it's been a while, but I am back with a Snippet Wednesday for your perusal. And it's a bit of a technology and media edition. I hope you don't mind.
Hero
I read a rather disconcerting Tweet from @martymankins today. It simply stated "R.I.P. Guitar Hero" and contained a link to a story for more information.
Palm
Prior to Marty's previous Tweet was one announcing another tech death, this one for Palm. Many of us who like tech toys and personal planning are familiar with Palm because of their Palm Pilot planners and Treo phones, among many other devices. Hewlett-Packard (HP) bought out Palm recently and their new product line announcement shows that there is nothing in the works for the Palm brand.
I've owned three different Palm Pilots throughout the years and have loved each and every one of them. They were fantastic devices. But, apparently, HP feels they have nothing left to offer the gadget world.
Slash
Since I'm on a Twitter roll, I read one from Slash (yes, the former guitarist of Guns 'n' Roses and Snakepit and Velvet Revolver, although that last one could still come back) that so perfectly and succinctly reflected my own opinion regarding all the snow in the world right now.
MAYA
Since I've now so smoothly transitioned into music, I just want to give a little love to one of my favorite current artists, she being the brilliance known as M.I.A. I've loved everything that she has done so far and her latest, the ViCKi LEEKX mixtape, is sheer genius. It's a great 36-minute-long single track that makes for killer running music.
Plus, the album name is pretty damn cool.
I loves me some M.I.A.
Justified
Speaking of love, tonight is the season two premiere of Timothy Olyphant's Justified on FX. Actually, it's on as I type this. Woo hoo!
Lights
And if you want another example of the excellence in programming that is coming from little ol' FX, check out the boxing drama Lights Out. It's about a retired former heavyweight champ named Patrick "Lights" Leary and how his personal and professional life have gone to the crapper since his retirement following a controversial fight. Check it out if you get a chance. Seriously good stuff.
V
Now if you wanna talk about bad television, I guess that's what I would call ABC's V (the remake of the old 1980s series). I'm still watching it, although I don't know why. I think it may officially be time to give it up. When a show has been relegated so far back as to be nothing but filler noise while you do other stuff, that's bad. When a show has become so much filler that you didn't even realize until it was too late that you had watched two episodes out of order, that's worse.
Pass
From bad to worse (I couldn't pay the devil for smoother transitions than the ones I'm spewing out tonight), I can't help but think that the new Owen Wilson movie Hall Pass is just going to be such utter garbage that I'll be vomiting in my mouth the entire time if I see it. Therefore I shall not. How can a movie about a guy who is so repressed and unhappy that his wife has to give him a one-week reprieve from their marriage be any good?
Yeah... no.
I get that Slash was pretty awesome in the 80's, but can he please do something relevant again to justify putting him on the halftime show lineup for the Super Bowl? Is that really too much to ask?
Dropping GH is a huge mistake. That game is really fun especially for people who can't play the actual instruments!
Justified is straight awesomeness with a side of Seth Bullock. I didn't know you watched it and now I'm even more stoked to call you my brother-in-crime.

I watched the first six or so episodes of V then promptly forgot about it. I've been meaning to go back and watch what I've missed but now I'm not sure it's worth it. This isn't the first thing I've read that leads me to believe V is a big pile of pants.

Well, Slash did release two albums with Velvet Revolver in about four years time and they are actively auditioning new lead vocalists since splitting with Weiland. I thought VR was much better than their semi-supergroup counterpart in Audioslave.
It took me a couple episodes to get into Justified but now that I am...

Don't insult pants like that.

I LOVE M.I.A, too. Kickass.
So - you're gonna go see Hall Pass?!

Totally! You wanna go with? I'm sure it will be better than Motörhead. Pfftt... Who needs Lemmy when you can have Jason Sudeikis?
How much are those Motörhead tix anyway?

the stupid cable box didn't cooperate and switch channels the way it's supposed to, so we missed the first half of the V episode of 3(?) weeks ago... and the half we did catch left us clueless (they were tracking down this missing girl? That's somehow related to abductions by the Vs? wha?) ... and the 2weeks-ago episode was just painful, the whole soul thing is just plain old ... we have last week's yet to be watched... I do think we've come to the end of our patience tho.
Still can't believe how different Inara looks with such short hair tho. I think she was a great choice for Anna. I just with the writers, producers, etc did a better job with the friggin plot!

That's exactly my problem, there so much tangential veering in this show that it just smacks of a show desperate to keep viewers with overreaching stories and whatnot. They're struggling to fill time. And the sad thing is that this isn't even a full-season show. Can you imagine how bad it would be if they were required to fulfill a 22-24 episode season? YIKES! That episode you referenced about the missing girl? I saw the whole thing and am still not entirely sure how it's all related.
I want Baccarin's long hair back, too. She's scary with short hair. Sure, that works well for this show, but unless she grows it back, the only thing I see her playing is fairies and pixies. Perhaps a live-action revival of The Dark Crystal?

I've had three Palms myself -- the Pro, The Tungsten and the TX. I still have the Tungsten and the TX and a bonus color one of some sort. All three are sitting unused, though the TX didn't get retired until some time around October when I got my smart phone.

Thanks for the tweet/blog mentions.
The death of Guitar Hero is sad indeed, but as you said, I think they overloaded the franchise with so many sequels that people just got burned out. I have 3 versions at home and while I don't play them nearly as much as I would like to, when I do, they are fun to play. I see that the last GH version "Warriors Of Rock" has a homage to Rush's "2112" so I may have to find that and add it to the other versions, just to see if I can reach that level.
The removal of the Palm brand is another sad moment for me. As with yourself, I had Palm devices over the years. Still have my Palm IIIx sitting on my desk at home. It rarely gets used, but it still works great. And runs on AAA batteries for at least a month of heavy use.
I also still have my previous phone, a Treo 755p, which I have a hard time parting with, even though I've moved all my data to my Palm Pre.

My TX didn't get retired until I got my Blackberry a year and a half ago. I loved that TX and miss using it but it makes no sense to use it when I've got an iPhone.

It's hard to replace attachments to beloved devices. As for GH, I have two versions, 3 and World Tour, and even though I finished 3 I still go back and play it primarily because it was so much fun and has a great selection of songs.
