She's got me going haywire...
I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone for all their well wishes and kind words and expressions of sheer shock on our announcement yesterday. The outpouring here on my blog and on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram has been overwhelming to say the very least.
Who'd'a thunk that to be popular online, all I had to do was get Katie pregnant?
I keed! I keed!
One thing I am worried about, though, is letting kapgar.com become the next Daddy Blog. Not that I have anything against daddy or mommy bloggers in any way, shape, or form. I just know that many of you who read this blog have come to expect an amalgam of mental drivel, a train wreck of posts, a conglomeration of not-at-all-affiliated crap.
Who am I to disappoint you?
So what I propose is that, when I do a parental or daddy styled post, I will make sure to have a TUA that is completely off the beaten path. Okay? That way, you will all hopefully have something to read.
Don't get me wrong, the little dude or dudette isn't even here yet and I'm proud as can be, but I also don't want you to pop by, see a daddy post, and immediately leave if that's not your thing. I do want to keep you all entertained. Of course I say that as if I was ever entertaining at all.
Dream big, Kevin.
I'm kinda disappointed right now.
I found an Apple Store giftcard laying around that I completely forgot about. I got a little excited because I was hoping to go out and buy an iPad Camera Connection Kit so I could hook up my D-SLR and import photos to my iPad so I have them backed up to the cloud and upload to Flickr without having to use a laptop or desktop computer.
I knew beforehand that the two adapters that come in the kit were either USB or for SD memory cards. Since my camera uses CompactFlash, I figured the USB adapter would work great.
Imagine my surprise when I found out that my D-SLR does not have a mini USB out on it (I SWORE it did; to the point that I'm almost certain I've plugged my camera into a computer directly via cable instead of always using a reader). Imagine my further surprise when I hooked my card reader to the USB adapter and got an error message saying that the attached device requires too much power to function on the dock connection.
What the bloody what???
Any ideas how to deal with this? And don't say, "buy a new camera." All things considered, that ain't gonna happen. I love my Sony A350 and have no plans to replace it even if most newer cameras all tend to use SD cards.
Is there such a thing as a powered USB card reader for CompactFlash?
Photonuts... help me!!!
Okay, I'm going to return to watching Haywire now. I'm over halfway through and far less than enthused. Although I will admit that, as a former UFC star, Gina Carano is great at kicking butt and making it look good while doing it. Plus, I'm too invested right now to quit watching.
Why does that crap happen to me?
UPDATE: It appears I do have a mini-B 8-pin USB (flat) out on my camera, but I don't own mini-B cables at all. I mean, who really owns one of those cables? Has anybody ever had a need for one until me at this very moment?
Ah, yet another thing to buy.
Technology, you are a fickle bitch.
UPDATE 2: I just realized this was supposed to be a Snippet Wednesday, wasn't it? Crap.
I probably have some of those cables as I'm currently having to use four different USB cables for different devices: Apple, BT headphones, iPhone bike battery case, & regular mini-USB. I don't know which types those middle two are.
In case you're not aware, monoprice.com is pretty much the best place to get cables of any type. Huge selection and amazing prices.

I had the same worries you did about not turning my blog into a mommy blog. For me, there were times my blog space had to be all about Gavin. It took probably a good 6-12 months before I found any routine or was able to wrap my head around things other than mommyhood. During that time, I definitely lost some readers. But, now that I'm back to a balance of mommy stuff with other things, new readers have appeared. All I can say is be true to yourself. You'll know what you want to write about and you'll have an audience to read it.

I'm not gonna lie, I'm actually really curious to know what a daddy blog is like so suffice it to say I'll more than likely be reading all your daddy posts! :)

For a CF to iPad card reader, try this one:

As for daddy related posts, I get that. There are several blogs that I used to read more often and don't as much now once a child comes into the regular blogging pattern (sorry Nilsa... I still love your blog and your writing) I so look forward to seeing a nice mix of posts and the curious ramblings of a new dad with his first child.

I think what you need is a powered hub. Yes, I know that's cRaZy but I have the same problem with my generic one. I can't believe some of the generic apple connection kits haven't taken care of this problem (with a cr4032 or something). A few of the generic ones show a thumb reader for SD plugged in, but none show a CF plugged in (but they say CF works), my tidy CF reader does not work
But if you're going to get the hub, you might as well as just use a cable. I don't know if I've done that with my DSLR yet. Or if I just imported into my laptop.
@marty, that CF interface is pretty cool, I've never seen that before.
FYI, They've got identical looking ones on eBay for $18 shipped and similar ones for $14 (now I'm tempted to get that one). Search for "iPad CF kit"

That seems like a pretty decent policy to have overall. Thanks. I'm sure it will take some figuring out.

I was too desperate and went to Wal-Mart. Stupid me. More details on my fix soon.

I'll be sure to keep you entertained. ;-)

So there is a reader? I wonder why Apple doesn't advertise it or carry it in-store. I did find a cable but this could work much better. I wonder why there's no support on the new iPad though.
Fear not, if it's "curious ramblings" you want, I'm sure I'll be able to provide them.

I will definitely search that out. I found a cable that seems to work right now but I'd prefer just the block connection and nothing else and the cost savings you and Marty are offering up is pretty decent. Thanks!

Hmm, I don't own one and have never seen them but I could have sworn the ipad camera connection kit thingy was a kind of SD card reader. No? The fact that it's not means that I probably won't be buying one for my wife anytime soon.

One half of it is an SD card reader, but my camera uses CompactFlash. Hence my dilemma.
