Snippet Wednesday...
Welcome to another fine Snippet Wednesday. Please keep your arms inside the vehicle at all times.
Ending
During Nathan's nap yesterday, I tried to catch up on a couple DVDs that I got from the library that were due back last night. I really wasn't sure I'd have a chance to watch either because Nathan's naps are so short, but he stayed down for just shy of four hours so I got both watched. And, oddly, they were both movies with "End" in the title. The World's End with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost and This Is The End with Jay Baruchel, Seth Rogen, and James Franco, among many others.
I'll make it fun and say I really enjoyed End but was only so-so about End.
Performing
Sure, Super Bowl XLVIIIABC123 was kind of a bust in terms of exciting football action. Yes, Seattle cleaned up and won their first championship, but they can't be happy about how pitiful their opponent turned out to be. Combine the sad game with the even sadder commercials and I was left with what? Not much. But I will admit that when I finally got around to watching the halftime show (I was putting Nathan to bed as it aired live) and Bruno Mars knocked that one straight through the uprights. He was energized, his vocals were great, the band was on the mark, and it was just, simply put, great entertainment.
And as much as I love the Red Hot Chili Peppers, they were completely unnecessary. They were a sidenote in the greatness that was Bruno Mars.
Mobilizing
It's came out in the news lately that Nintendo's profit projections for last year are wayyyyyy off the mark. Like they inflated their expectations multifold and now it's coming to bite them in the butt. So badly that executives are taking pay cuts to offset the losses or maybe just to show some note of sympathy with shareholders, I dunno. Anyway, a couple days later, I see another article stating that Nintendo is continuing their staunch refusal to allow their properties (characters and game titles, etc.) to be used in the mobile phone gaming realm. That means that we will continue to not see Donkey Kong, Mario & Luigi, Metroid, and Kid Icarus, among hundreds of other properties on our iPhones, Android devices, etc. Wouldn't you think that if a company is having money problems that they should pursue any potential revenue generator they can find? Lord knows I would be all over a copy of the original Super Mario Bros. games on my iPhone. That would be AWESOME! Nintendo Corp., you are being a bunch of pigheaded morons who are going to cease to exist in five years time at the rate you're going. Being the Nintendo fan I am, this idea saddens me greatly.
Mario seppuku. 'Nuff said.
Guilting
If there's one thing I've noticed about myself since setting this Fitbit 10,000 steps goal, it's that I've become very competitive. I'm constantly looking at where I rank compared to my friends and I'm looking for more ways to sneak in extra steps. Of course this competitiveness has inadvertently resulted in a side effect -- guilt. Man, when I don't hit that 10,000 step mark, I feel guilty. If I'm under 5,000 steps like I was last night because I was home all day with Nathan, it eats at me. I actually went downstairs and did laps in the living room and kitchen to get me up to 5,000. If I can make it to 7,500, I'm better but still feel bad.
I suppose there are worse things in life to become obsessed with, right?
Think about this. Nintendo owns tons of IPs. They also own hardware to play these IPs on. Once they start 3rd partying their IPs out to other platforms it's curtains for Nintendo as a company that makes hardware. Who is gonna want to buy Zelda on the new DS or Wii product when they can get it on an iPhone for 99 cents, on some other company's device? They're all about protecting their brand, something they should have done in the mid 90s when they sold off some of their IPs to 3rd party hardware developers. That's why you see Mega Man, Castlevania, and Ninja Gaiden games on Sony and Microsoft products.

Oh I get it. But the thing they're missing is that fewer and fewer people seem to want to buy their hardware to get those titles. The WiiU is bombing bad. The 3DS is doing well but for how long can the entire company survive on the sales of a portable system only? Putting their IPs on third party devices does not mean they lose control of them. It doesn't have to be like Apple licensing their OS in the early 90s to PowerPC. Nintendo would retain full creative control but just create games and sell them for Android and iOS and Windows Mobile. And they get access to a whole crew of buyers with more than enough will to spend a few bucks for an app who have no desire to buy and carry around another portable hardware system. If they rebound, they can even yank the titles. They can look at this as a quick financial fix. I'm. It saying license the IPs out to other companies to make the games. Have Nintendo developers make them and then put them up for sale in these other app stores as "Nintendo Corp." They lose nothing and gain both money and a new audience.

Even I knew the game was terrible and I don't even know what I'm talking about when it comes to American Football ;-)
Mars was good. Boy can play the drums! Chilli Peppers was an odd pairing wasn't it. Don't think it really worked.

The Chilis totally did not work although Chad's drumkit was pretty awesome.

I have to agree that the RHCP performance was lackluster. I called it that the only song that would work without too many edits and fit into the grand scheme was "Give It Away" I understood the whole "unplugged" as most live performances are like that for stadium-sized events. But I wanted more, not just a backup band for Bruno Mars. Hard to believe this was the most watched TV event in history.
Nintendo is pulling a Blackberry. They need to get their titles on other platforms. I understand protecting their hardware sales, but except for the WiiU, they are selling hardware like crazy. Make iOS and Android versions of 10 of their best hits. See how they do. I bet once they see a huge influx, they will find that people want their games on other platforms.
While I love to make my 10k steps for the day as well, there are days like yesterday where it's just not going to happen. And I'm ok with that for now.

I like the idea of a slow build for Nintendo to mobile devices so they're not pulling too many dev resources. Good call.
