Tu(n)esday: Freebies...

I'm not sure how closely you all pay attention to sites and companies that offer up free music. I used to be much more in tune (pun fully intended) with all that, but I've cut back a little bit of late. These days, I get free music mostly from Starbucks and iTunes.

I thought I'd use this Tu(n)esday to recap a few of my more recent free single acquisitions and hopefully have you all chime in with some of your own.

Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings - "Stranger To My Happiness" (via Starbucks)
I've known of Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings for some time, but could not, for the life of me, name a song. After listening to this 60s Motown-inspired track, I'll be looking for more. In fact, I already told Katie that, if she's planning on getting me anything for Valentine's Day, make it the deluxe version of Give The People What They Want. It also made me immediately want to listen to more Motown, so I fired up some old Stevie Wonder. Good times.

Young the Giant - "Crystallized" (via Starbucks... I think; Katie downloaded it)
Young the Giant is a band I'm kinda hit or miss with. They have decent enough music -- such as "My Body," "Cough Syrup," and Apartment" -- but it doesn't stay with me for long. I tend to listen a few times and then move on. "Crystallized," however, is pretty damn good. I may check out some more.

Yuna - "Rescue" (via Starbucks)
I heard this song once on a top 40 FM radio station and really enjoyed it. So much so that I Shazam'd it and kept it in my tags intending to pick it up later. Then Starbucks made it free. I've listened a few times and it's still decent, but not enough so that I want to pick up any more of her album Nocturnal. Free doesn't always mean great, folks.

U2 - "Invisible" (via iTunes and promo'd during the Super Bowl)
Oh, U2... I'm sorry, but I've never been an apologist or blind lover of their work. Their early stuff is great... War, Boy, The Joshua Tree... but anything since, and including Achtung Baby kinda sucks. That's going to be a very unpopular point of view, I know, but it's me being honest. This does not, however, mean I don't give their new stuff a try. Usually, their album lead-in singles are great. "Vertigo" remains a favorite. But the rest of the corresponding albums is lackluster. So, imagine my disappointment when I downloaded this freebie and just plain didn't like it. That does not bode well for the upcoming release of their next album. I guess, if anything, I should be happy that the download resulted in a donation to Project (RED).

Last week's Macro Monday challenge entry didn't garner as many guesses and I suppose that's because it was too easy and everyone saw their guess in the comments. Here's the photo in question... Here's what it is... An upside down...

The only U2 I know is the song from Batman Forever. Ha.

Wow. That's not really a bad thing.

Ha ha. Mr. Apgar, I formally invite you to give my blog a gander whenever you have a little bit of time. Thank you.

I will!

Yeah I'm kinda with you on U2. They're one of those bands, like Simple Minds, whose sound changed mid point in their career. In the case of both bands I far preferred their earlier albums to their later work. Joshua Tree was really the last really good album they made IMHO.

Marty Mankins

Unpopular opinion here, especially for "Achtung Baby", which I thought was pretty great. I still like their older stuff, but I do admit to really not liking their last album "No Line On The Horizon" Just thought it wasn't all that good.

This new song? I like it. It's catchy and has a decent beat.

iTunes streamed the entire new Young The Giant album a couple of weeks ago. A nice strong effort.

I was a fan of Rattle and Hum but that was more of a love album with three new studio tracks. So, yeah, The Joshua Tree.

Something about the new song just doesn't cut it for me and I totally agree that No Line on the Horizon was lackluster. Wayyyyy lackluster.
