If...
For a few years now, I've been hearing about this web service called IFTTT (If This, Then That). Simply put, you could create what they dubbed "recipes" that create a reaction based on an action. For example, I hit this button, then that happens. See where I'm going?
On the web, though, this recipe would integrate two seemingly disparate systems so that they would work together to create a desired end result.
After hearing about it for some time and seeing that Typepad had an IFTTT recipe that allowed for posting of Instagram photos right to your blog, I thought I'd give IFTTT a shot and see what I could come up with.
I'll be darned if I can come up with anything. It seems like most of the logical recipes involve smart technology outside of phones and tablets. Well, not entirely. You would use your phone or tablet to kick off the recipe, but the secondary end of the recipe is usually something "smart" in nature. An example would be that when your phone hits 5 p.m., a signal is automatically sent to trigger your Nest thermostat to pump up the temperature at home in anticipation of your arrival. Sure, you can probably do this via a Nest app, but this option is there.
Therein lies the problem. I do not have any "smart" appliances at home. No smart TV, no smart washer and dryer, no smart thermostat. Nada. Zilch. Zip.
So, basically, I'm having trouble coming up with any reason to use IFTTT. Sounds cool, but does me no good, yanno?
Have any of you created any IFTTT recipes? Care to share? I'm still curious, but struggling for ideas.
I have a recipe that logs all Foursquare gym check-ins to a Google spreadsheet.

Can I ask for what purpose? Curiosity question. Just wondering what you'd do with the spreadsheet.

At the time, I would include workout details such as swim distance. I thought it would be good to have a log. I don't look at it.

That would be useful.

No smart appliances here, either. And given the ones I've seen at the CES trade show, I don't care to have any in the future.
