Tu(n)esday: Imagination...
Have you ever changed the lyrics to a song in your head? It doesn't even have to be the entire song. Maybe just a single line.
I was doing that today with one of the lines from one of my favorite songs from one of my favorite movies ever. The movie? Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. The song? "Pure Imagination." It gets me every time I hear it. Lyrically, it is such an optimistic song. The way it's presented by Gene Wilder though is tinged with cynicism and despair. Or maybe that's just how I hear it. He looks so sad as he sings it. Like he had these dreams for a better future that all just came crashing down because no one else shared his rose-tinted vision. Yanno? Check it out...
I took the line "Come with me and you'll be in a world of pure imagination" and kept the first part, adding in the follow-ups as they popped in my head.
Hey, I think they're funny. In an equally despondent way.
"Come with me and you'll be in a world of CG animation"
Note: "CG" means "Computer Generated." Doesn't it feel like everything is fake in this over-Hollywood'd world? Sometimes I'm confused as to what I can actually believe.
"Come with me and you'll be in a world of routine machination"
Life tends to get pretty robotic. Wake up. Eat. Commute. Work. Commute. Eat. Sleep. Hence, routine machination.
"Come with me and you'll be in a world of cult indoctrination"
Do I really need to explain this one?
"Come with me and you'll be in a world of under-education"
A sad reality of life. Doesn't matter if you're a first world or third world country, it happens everywhere.
"Come with me and you'll be in a world of hyper-caffeination"
Do I really need to explain this one?
"Come with me and you'll be in a world of makeup application"
Kind of a stupid one. But, on second consideration, it kinda ties into the CG animation claim of this world being really fake.
"Come with me and you'll be in a world of outward degradation"
Be it your education level, race, culture, religion, education, gender, sexual orientation, whatever. Everyone seems to be the target of ridicule. It's a mad mad world.
"Come with me and you'll be in a world of voter obfuscation"
This is my favorite one of the bunch. How many people really know what they're voting for when they go to the polls? I try to educate myself but I admit I focus so much on a handful of races that, when I arrive to punch my ballot, I see things I never even knew would be on there. This is partly my fault, but I think it's also the fault of campaigns and our whole voting process. You can't know it all, can you? Especially when some people don't want you to know it. And "obfuscation" is one of my favorite words in the English language. Such a great word.
"Come with me and you'll be in a world deprived of great elation"
When you consider everything listed above, a lack of enthusiasm for this world's prospects is pretty understandable, don't you think?
Got any others for me?
