Believe it or not, I'm not a scotch fan. (I know, bourbon and whisky/whiskey get all of the aged love here with me) but I have had a few scotches here and there. Balvenie is one that I've not tried before, but given your admonishment, I will have to seek this one out next time I have the opportunity.

Is it the earthiness of scotch you don’t like?

The smokiness. Even bourbons that have a heavy smoky flavor and essence to them are not to my liking. Scotches that I've had that I am ok with for a small sip are: Ardbeg and Lagavulin. Both are smoky but not as heavy as some other scotches that I've tried.

I imagine one day, scotch will be a part of my aged liquor enjoyment.
