TBT: Separated...

Being that this is Halloween, it's a good time to talk about those things that terrify us beyond comprehension. Yes, I'm going there. I'm sorry but you'll just have to deal with it. And mine is made all the more timely because I just finished watching season one of Lore on Amazon Prime (you might be familiar with this name because of my Kevin's 7 Podcast lists of the last couple years - 2017 | 2016) and the final episode ("Unboxed") was all about dolls.

Few things scare me like dolls. They're just plain horrifying. The only thing I can't quite figure out is if I'm more terrified by realistic ones or those that are just so far out of whack that they remind you of something out of a horror film. You might think realistic ones are worse. Then you'll find out about Robert the Doll in Key West.

Whatever the case, they give me the willies. And this episode of Lore did nothing to assuage that fear. Not one iota.

For context's sake, I had heard the podcast version of "Unboxed" a couple years ago and it weirded me out. Having a visual version of that podcast? Ohmigod. Actually seeing Robert the Doll and the footage of that ventriloquist dummy that a stand-up comedian raised as one of his own children and... oh, the worst... la Isla de las Muñecas (The Island of the Dolls)!

Can you imagine boating down a river and seeing an island with dolls hanging from trees and manmade outposts and piers and... just everywhere? The images of this island are horrifying. It's like The Lord of the Flies with plastic and rubber. And to think the man who did all this was doing so to appease the spirit of a girl whose lifeless body he found in the water off the shore of this island. Supposedly these dolls are possessed by her spirit and the limbs have been observed to move and eyes open and voices can be heard. GAH!!

I've been to Mexico. A couple times, in fact. After learning about this, I see no reason to ever go back. Cartels, secuestros, y muñecas? No, no, y no. Sorry, Mexico, three strikes and you're out.
