Potential…

The new fall broadcast TV season has kicked off with early showings of new series on several networks. To be honest, there hasn’t been much that has really jumped out at me as “must watch.” It’s more like, “okay, kinda interesting, maybe we’ll give it a chance.”

It hasn’t been a terrible way to approach it. Expectations stay low.

As of tonight, we’ve watched two episodes of one show and one episode of two other shows.

Rescue: HI-Surf, FOX

This show is already on the chopping block. It may get one or two more episodes. The acting is so stiff. It’s trying to be Baywatch highlighting the lives of lifeguards on Hawaii’s North Shore but without the overt sexuality.

Let’s just say the Hasselhoff take is winning. That’s really saying something. And not something good.

Matlock, CBS

I had no desire to watch this show at all when it was first announced. I never watched the original and I’m hit or miss with Kathy Bates. But seeing the teasers where her character acknowledges the original as a work of televised fiction she watched years before instead of her being a relative of his character stoked my interest.

The first episode was cool. It has potential. And it presented a really cool twist at the end that will make this season interesting… but it does give it a shelf life. I feel like there’s no way this show can keep going beyond one or, at most, two seasons before the twist becomes too long in the tooth.

High Potential, ABC

This is the only show I actually wanted to watch from the get-go because of its obvious inspiration from USA Network’s Psych but a bit more serious. Plus it has Judy Reyes from Scrubs who is a sorely under appreciated actress. The first two episodes of this show have been great.

Basically, Kaitlin Olson is a single mom of three kids who cannot hold down a job because her high IQ and desire to solve any inconsistency she happens to see keeps how from focusing on her job at hand. But one night, while working as a janitor for the LAPD, she spies a murder board and changes details on it that she feels don’t fit the narrative the PD created. They find out it’s her who changed it and bring her on board to offer insight as a consultant. Love love LOVE it. Please stay this good.

What are you watching this season?

Didn't like the first, at all... am enjoying the other two as well.

Yeah, we just watched the second episode of Rescue last night while going to bed and, for show that’s should be high action and fast paced, it’s boring and slow. I don’t understand why.

Loved Matlock. Kathie Bates is a treasure! But I do agree that they'll have to come up some new twists, once the initial ones are covered.
