RIP33…
Today marks the 33rd anniversary of the deaths of vocalist Freddie Mercury of Queen and drummer Eric Carr of KISS. It’s strange because while I mourned their deaths as I learned about them, my brain didn’t register until the last few years that they died on the exact same date.
I knew of Mercury’s death almost immediately being that it happened a mere day after he came out as HIV positive. He was very much in the forefront of a pre-Web media blitz.
It was impossible to not be aware of Mercury’s death.
Carr, on the other hand, had several things going against him in terms of visibility. He was the second - although current - drummer of a hard rock band that was kinda on the outs in terms of popularity. KISS had surpassed their 70s to early 80s heyday and were struggling to find their identity in a rock and metal-saturated environment. Don’t get me wrong, I loved them and Carr was easily the best drummer that band has ever had, but the mid to late-80s were not kind to the band.
I don’t know for certain, but I may not have known about Carr’s death for upwards of a week after it happened.
Either way, though, I mourn and miss them both. Neither band has been the same since their deaths although both had tried desperately to remain relevant to some degree.
RIP Fre
Carr drummed for KISS for 11 years before his death. I really like that period of the band and the albums they made.
Freddie was a legend. Both will always be missed and I think you are right about both bands not being the same since both of them died.

I'm not that familiar with Kiss' music, but I do love Queen.
