Pencil…
We got Nate an Apple Pencil for Christmas to go with the Procreate app he’s been wanting for a little while. We bought him the 2nd generation so it had magnetic charging on his iPad.
He opened it yesterday and tried to pair it with it no luck. So we followed all instructions we found online and nothing. It magnetized to the side of his iPad but we got no indication of it charging but I guess that should be zero surprise because we couldn’t get it to pair so there’s be no errors in his iPad and, well, it’s a pencil so it doesn’t have a screen to give us error messages on the actual device.
I did some more digging only to discover that it’s not compatible with his iPad 9th generation. It’s compatible with Pro 12.9 inch 3rd-6th gen, Pro 11 inch 1st-4th gen, Air 4th-5th gen, and Mini 6th. I think we wanted to take advantage of a quickly ending Black Friday deal, so we may have looked at the specs too quickly and figured that’s four generations (four years) of Pro and 1-2 years of lesser models in the Mini and Air, so why not our less-than-two-years-old standard iPad?
Why not? Because Apple says so, that’s why. No standard iPads at all. That just sucks. And it all has to do with charging. Despite the Pencil sticking right to the side, it can’t charge. And that is not very clear.
So we’re returning it and getting a 1st gen. Thankfully we didn’t order it too early or we wouldn’t be able to return it anymore. And now he needs another cable for charging.
I pray the 1st gen comes with everything for that. And works. Very important, that last bit.
Technology… amirite?
When I had my 9.7 iPad Pro, it used the 1st gen Pencil. Then I upgraded to the 2018 11-inch Pro, which I still have and which only works with the 2nd gen Pencil. I think it's very confusing to have these Pencils and knowing what model uses what.
Apple really needs to better streamline the iPad and iPad accessory products.

Or the iPads should just come with the Pencils. We pay enough for them already.

I think you are right. The pencil should have been included. But instead, they started removing things like a power supply (as they did with iPhones)

I gotta admit I’m kinda worried about the charger on the Pencil 1 since it’s just a male Lightning end that you need to charge by plugging it into an iPad or iPhone charger port. Seems very flimsy and easily breakable.
