Stellar
I was watching Ridley Scott’s original Gladiator the other night and, when it wrapped, Paramount+ recommended a few other movies. Among them was one I’d never seen and never truly considered watching before, Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar.
I’ll be straight with ya, while I’ve liked every Nolan film I’ve seen (the list includes Memento, Insomnia, the Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, and The Prestige), I’m hit or miss on Interstellar’s star Matthew McConaughey. He’s an odd one. He can be alternately charming and smarmy. He can be equal parts funny and annoying AF. That’s probably why I shied away.
But I was awake and it was staring right at me (and it costars Anne Hathaway, who I do so like) so I clicked play.
While it seemed like pretty standard end-of-humanity science fiction fare for the first couple of hours, that final hour left me with my jaw hanging open. I was able to predict most of the twists but only by a handful of seconds before they were revealed, which is to say, I was gobsmacked. There’s a word you don’t hear often.
I’m not going to discuss what those reveals were because it would ruin the movie for anyone who hasn’t seen it. But let’s just say I was getting a little teary eyed at the end. And then as I laid in bed thinking about it some more, I was almost weeping.
It was a beautiful, near-perfect film and I want to watch it again. Guess what! It’s coming back to theaters for its 10th anniversary in another week or so. I may have to do it. That would be awesome on the big screen.
I liked the movie but didn't really appreciate it fully until I saw this timeline and how it all fits together (big spoilers)... https://imgur.com/interstellar-explained-massive-spoilers-MgwWMFU

Oh wow! That is incredible. But I had to find it on Reddit because the Imgur one you linked kept redirecting to kitten photos when I tried to zoom in to read it.

I really liked Interstellar and it's pretty close to being my favorite Nolan film. I will have to check showtimes for movie theaters. It would be great to see it on the big screen again (which I how I watched it the first time in 2014)

If you have a Flashback Cinema partner near you, it’s showing the weekend of January 19. I’m planning to go, for sure.

Unfortunately, there are no shows in Utah for this movie.

Yeah, I looked it up and there are no partners theaters in the entire state of Utah. Sorry.

For whatever reason the first time I watched it I was a bit underwhelmed. Last year I rewatched it and went "hang on, this is a bloody great movie". It's really really good. I don't think there's a Nolan movie I've watched I haven't liked.

It took me a couple viewings to get into Inception, truth be told. But then a friend told me to stop trying to figure it out and just let it “wash over me.” So I did. And then I liked it. All his others I liked immediately although I really need to rewatch both Memento and Insomnia, neither of which I’ve seen since they first came out. And I haven’t seen Dunkirk, Tenet, or Oppenheimer at all.
