Half

Yeah, I do subscribe to newsletters from and club programs online that wind up giving you stuff on your birthday. Most of it is from restaurants that give you some kind of free drink or free dessert or free side or, far more rarely these days, a free entree.

As a result, for a couple weeks, during our birth months, we’ve got some free stuff coming and it’s pretty nice.

But a few days ago, when I hit my half birthday, I started receiving some unexpected “half birthday” freebies. This has never happened before.

From Portillo’s, a piece of their famous chocolate cake…

From Chipotle, a free drink and a reminder that I have more than enough points for a free entree and I should start using them…

This is a strange, but welcome, new way to drag us in to their restaurants. Or, at least, get us to order online for carry out. Whichevs.

No, not the meat substitute. I’m talking about spam calls to my cellphone. And they’ve ticked up a bit today. From May 1 thru June 8, I received a grand total of eight spam calls. Entirely tolerable while still annoying....

I used to sign up for many of the places I went to. Now, it's slim pickens for anything free unless you purchase two entrees. I have maybe 10 I get still and use at least 7 of those. Like Red Robin (free burger with purchase), Del Taco (free shake) and Kona Grill (they give me $25 each year for my birthday)

Starbucks still has the free drink, but only on your exact birthday. But no half birthday emails have come my way.

kapgar

Yeah, I hate that Starbucks is only the day of your birthday. No wiggle room.
