Audiobooks

I think I may, for now at least, be done with audiobooks.

Whereas a few years ago, audiobooks from Audible and Libby were my go-to in order to effectively and efficiently read books, I’ve noticed in the last year or so that I just don’t register what I read as well in audio format. If I’m asked about a book I’ve listened to, my recall isn’t there.

There are also many times I wind up dozing off while listening and then I need to rewind over and over and over again. And trying to remember where you were or what you last heard in an audiobook is never easy.

While I’ve been aware of it for a while, trying to listen to Stephen King’s Pet Sematary a couple weeks ago was my breaking point. I know the story from the movie so I know what should happen and approximately when. But while listening to it, I’ve noticed that I’m at one point and don’t recall hearing the expected intervening steps having occurred. This was a book I really wanted to read so having this happen is frustrating.

Instead, I have found myself returning to podcasts again. Or, at least, one podcast anyway… This May Hurt a Bit about horror movie franchises. Great podcast but I’m still slowly making my way through their backlog of episodes.

The good thing about podcasts is that they don’t necessarily require the level of continuous attention that a book does. It’s much easier to pick up and go and pause and whatnot. At least for me it is.

Let’s see how far I get this time. I’m halfway Through the Wishmaster franchise discussion so about January 2023. Not bad.

I get those fall asleep times. I do that with podcasts, but then they are just an hour and I can re-listen when I am awake. The audiobook - not so easy to do that, as you said.

I am coming off a 3 month 99 cent a month Audible trial and have 3 new Audible books to listen to. I want to get back to audiobooks (and hardback books that I have owned for years and still have yet to read). I let my reading habits be consumed by other things in my life.
