Expansion
Congratulations to the WNBA on their recently announced expansion into three more markets!
As you may or may not know, this season, which started a couple months ago, marked the debut of the W’s 13th team, the Golden State Valkyries.
Next year will see the debut of the Toronto Tempo and a as-yet-unnamed team in Portland (here’s a fun subreddit discussing it).
And, according to Commissioner Cathy Engelbert’s press conference a few days ago, the league will expand into Cleveland in 2028, Detroit in 2029, and Philly in 2030.
Before the Valkyries, the league had a nice balance of two six-team conferences split geographically by the Mississippi River. Golden State added a seventh team in the west. No big deal. Even with the two 2026 teams, the conferences will sit at eight in the west and seven in the east.
But with all these new teams being in the “east,” based on that perceived dividing line, I’m sure some conference realignment will have to happen. Otherwise it will be eight teams in the west and 10 in the east. I’m guessing we’ll see Minnesota go to the Western Conference?
What do you think? Or will they just bank on a new Western Conference team after 2030?
